Dude, Where’s My Court?

back of attastor talking to magistrate in courtWe often get questions about what’s the difference between all the courts in Southern Nevada and what exact court is my case in? To try and clarify all the confusion, here is an overview of the most common courts in Southern Nevada, what type of cases the court handles, and where the court can be located:

Clark County District Court: this court is located at the Regional Justice Center, 200 Lewis Ave, Las Vegas, 89101. This Court handles all gross misdemeanor and felony criminal cases and civil cases (e.g., personal injury, breach of contract) where the amount in dispute is above $15,000. Eighth Judicial District Court (clarkcountycourts.us)

Las Vegas Justice Court: this court is also located at the Regional Justice Center, 200 Lewis Ave, Las Vegas, 89101. This court handles all misdemeanor criminal cases (including traffic tickets) where the crime is alleged to have occurred in Clark County, but outside the incorporated city limits of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City. However, gross misdemeanor and felony cases will start in this court (unless a defendant is indicted by a grand jury or the alleged crime occurred in North Las Vegas, Henderson, or Boulder City) until a preliminary hearing is held and a judge finds probable cause that the crime occurred, then the case gets sent to District Court for trial. This court will also handle civil cases (e.g., personal injury, breach of contract) where the amount in dispute is $15,000 or less, landlord-tenant disputes and evictions, and restraining orders that involve parties that have no “domestic” relationship.
