How Can I Get a Permit to Carry a Gun Concealed?
Open Carry
In Nevada, if you are legally entitled to possess a firearm, you also have the right to “open carry” the firearm– whether it’s a handgun, rifle, or shotgun. That is, as long as the firearm can be visibly seen by someone standing next to you, you are not committing any crime.
Carrying a Concealed Weapon (CCW)
However, what if you want to carry a firearm hidden in the waistband of your pants or inside your jacket pocket? In that case, you will have to first obtain a permit from the county where you live in (i.e., a “CCW permit”). Otherwise, you will be committing a felony offense punishable up to five years in prison.
Requirements
If you are interested in obtaining a permit to carry a firearm concealed on your person, you must meet the following qualifications:
(1) Be 21-years-old or older, or
(2) Be at least 18 years-old, but less than 21-years-old, and a current or former member of the Armed Forces in good standing, and
(3) Be legally entitled to possess a firearm under Nevada and federal law, and
(4) Take and pass a course in firearm safety.
Additionally, you must not have any of the following in your personal history:
(1) Outstanding warrant for your arrest;
(2) Judicially declared incompetent or insane;
(3) Admitted to a mental health facility during the previous 5 years before your application;
(4) Be a habitual user of alcohol or drugs to the extent that your normal faculties are impaired, including not having a conviction for a DUI during the previous 5 years before your application;
(5) Convicted of a crime involving the use or threatened use of force or violence, even if punishable as a misdemeanor, if committed within the previous 3 years before your application;
(6) Convicted of any felony crime;
(7) Convicted of a crime involving domestic violence or stalking;
(8) Currently subject to a temporary or extended restraining order;
(9) Currently on parole or probation;
(10) Not be subject to a suspended sentence or stayed adjudication for a felony crime during the previous 5 years before your application.
If you meet these requirements, and you pay the required fees, the sheriff of the county you applied in must issue you the CCW permit. However, if the Sheriff denies your application, you have the right to appeal the sheriff’s decision to the District Court of the county you applied in.
